California (Steve Chawkins-The Los Angeles Times) – Friends of a police officer killed during his arrest for alleged sex crimes sex crimes – WHAT??? were racked with disbelief Monday — at the charges as much as the fatal outcome.
They gathered at a street-corner shrine, remembering Albert Covarrubias Jr., 29, as a man far different from the one portrayed by his bosses after he was fatally shot by a fellow officer while police tried to arrest him a few blocks from department headquarters. Oh I gotta hear this one…
Police suspected Covarrubias, who reportedly was wed for a second time just a few weeks ago, of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old high school girl. How’s THAT for messy? Newlywed on his second, with some 17-year-old action on the side. This almost sounds like a sitcom.
Officers were attempting to detain him early Saturday as his shift ended and he was dismantling a DUI checkpoint, Santa Maria Police Chief Danny Macagni said at a somber weekend news conference. Covarrubias struggled with his colleagues, fired his own gun and was shot in return, the chief said. OH! Well that changes thing, now doesn’t it? Shooting at cops is NEVER a good idea, kids. There’s only a few ways that will turn out for you; and none of them are good.
In addition to suspecting Covarrubias of having a sexual relationship with a minor, Santa Maria police investigators believed that witnesses in the case were being intimidated, Macagni said at the news conference. Yeah, police intimidation on the part of this guy really doesn’t make me sympathetic to his plight. The chief was unavailable for comment Monday, and other Santa Maria officers said only he was authorized to speak about the situation.
On Monday, friends who attended Santa Maria High School with Covarrubias voiced skepticism about the official account.
“I just don’t believe what they say,” said Tiffany Almaguer, 29. “It just doesn’t sound right.” People change, sweetheart. Some guys let that shield go to their head, and they think they can get away with whatever they want.
Why, she asked, arrest a uniformed officer in public while he’s on duty? Sometimes they do that…
“Even in retail, if you’re suspected of shoplifting, you’re called to the office,” she said. You ARE? Really? And you would know this, HOW? “He came to work and he was ambushed.” Ambushed, my ass! America, dirty and rogue cops are arrested ALL THE TIME, in uniform. I had two stories from last year, in which two different cops were both arrested while on duty, IN UNIFORM. Unfortunately, they were eaten by the blog when I was redoing the site format.
If memory serves correctly, one was a guy from New Mexico, who was extorting sex from a prostitute in order to get her traffic tickets dismissed, and another was a young cop from Louisiana, who was also carrying on a fling with a high school girl. Both were on duty at the time of their arrest.
I guess it can happen,
The shooting is being investigated by the Santa Maria Police Department and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, a standard procedure in shootings by officers.
Sheriff’s spokesman Drew Sugars said he didn’t know when the investigation would be complete. He also said he wasn’t certain whether investigators would look at Covarrubias’ alleged crimes. That’s kind of moot at this point, isn’t it?
At the makeshift shrine near the shooting scene, friends of Covarrubias recalled him as the class clown. “He was an awesome person,” Almaguer said. “He was hilarious — in capital letters.” The guy allegedly threatened witnesses with his badge. Yeah, he sounds like a regular “cut up,” alright.
Fabiela Frausto, 29, had trouble believing the accusations against her high school pal. “That wasn’t the person we knew him to be,” she said. What is with all the high school pal, bs… He was 29. When was high school for you people, like over 10 years ago? Seriously, don’t you people evolve?
The shooting was the second in seven weeks by officers in the agricultural city.
Last December, police officers fatally shot Samyr Ceballos, suspected of being a drug dealer, after a brief pursuit. Two officers were wounded by friendly fire, Macagni said in the wake of that shooting. The Sheriff’s Department’s investigation is ongoing. Police wounded by friendly fire? That’s never a good thing. Aren’t you guy supposed to practice and log range time, or anything?
Guy’s come on… Cop or no cop, you have to be smarter than this! A 17-year-old piece of ass in no way, shape, or form, is worth your life. There is no way you are going to get away with it, ESPECIALLY if you’re a high-profile character. C’mon guys, you remember what girls were like at that age; little girls want to be big girls, and if you are better than anything her little screw head friends have, she’s not going away quietly.
Granted, by grown up standards, the rest of us think you’re a piece of shit for messing with a kid; but to someone who doesn’t know any better, you’re worth fighting for. Of COURSE she’s turning you in when you go off and get married to someone else. Dummy!
17 will get you 20, homeboy!
