UPDATE – 4/27/2012 – The victim’s mother is speaking out. The video follows the original story below.
Original story posted 3/7/2012
They said “this is what you deserve, white boy” as they dumped gasoline on him.
Missouri (The Gaslamp Post) - The family of a thirteen-year-old boy is now living in fear after their son was chased by two other youths, and set on fire on his own front porch. The young man reported being followed to his home, which was only two blocks away from his school, by two black youths and was cornered as he tried to enter his home.
“They rushed him on the porch as he tried to get the door open,” the boy’s mother, Melissa Coon said. Her son told her that one of the black kids put him in a headlock as the other grabbed the gas can. “(One of them) poured the gasoline, then flicked the Bic, and said, ‘This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy’.”
Immediately after setting the young man on fire, the two black youths ran off. Coon’s son was able to put himself out, enter his home to safety, and call for help. He is reported to have called both 911 and his father. He was taken to the hospital and spent several hours in the burn unit.
His mother said that there were lingering effects of the attack in the home. “You could smell the burned skin, you could smell the burned hair. It was just horrible,” said his mother. Coon told KMBC-TV that her son lost all of the hair on his face, his eyebrows and eyelashes and much from his head. The family is refusing to allow their son to return to the school because they believe his attackers also attend classes there. They are planning on transferring him to another school. The family says that the attack has affected all of them.
“My five-year-old came in and asked me, ‘Mom, am I going to get set on fire today?’” she said. “I was in tears.”
The two suspects are described as black males, both with facial hair. One is reported to have been wearing a blue hat, blue jacket with the number “23″ on it, and blue shoes. The other is reported to have been wearing a blue hat, black jacket, and glasses.
Anyone with information regarding this attack is asked to call Crime Stoppers as (816)474-TIPS.

UPDATE: 4/27/2012 - The victim’s mother has had it with the hypocrisy surrounding the Trayvon Martin case. Even though her son was attacked and set on fire because of his race, the police still refuse to call it a hate crime.
No information regarding the identity of the perpetrators has been forthcoming.

Hi Robert, thanks for posting.
Amazing isn’t it? This story MAYBE got one day of media coverage, yet ONE black child is shot and OUR PRESIDENT is weighing in? Don’t get me wrong, my heart goes out to the young man’s parents; I have kids of my own, I don’t wish this sort of thing on anyone.
I can’t help but think at times like these, that the template is already there, and if you don’t fit the definition of what a victim is supposed to be, then you don’t matter.

I don’t think we live in a world where people are forced to choose to care about one thing or another.
Both stories are important. A major difference however is that Trayvon is dead, his shooter is known, and individuals have stepped out on his behalf to oppose what appears to be another sign of a long history of racism in this country.
In this case, thankfully, the young boy emerged alive but there is no one to prosecute because the assailants have not been identified.
Furthermore, the media got involved in the Trayvon Martin case only AFTER a grassroots and social media-led protest began. President Obama as well as Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum have weighed in because they were asked for comments.
If you want this case to receive national media attention, just like with Trayvon Martin it will take a bottom up effort. I will say though that considering the differences between the two (not even considering the racial ones ), you’ve got an uphill battle.
Thanks for sharing this story. Although some of the comments seem misguided, I understand the sentiment. Hope I explained things well.

Hi AWordorThree, thanks for posting. Aside from the shooter not being arrested (because the incident is still under investigation), this incident was obviously what has been defined by “political correctness” as a “Hate Crime.” According to the victim, they attacked him based on his race.
There has yet in the case of young Trayvon, to make the connection that he was shot and killed due to his race. If you would be so kind, would you be able to let me know if something does surface which makes that connection?
This so-called, grass-roots movement, was already there, just waiting for something to come up that they could make a scene over. When you see Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakahn occupying the same stage, you can’t tell me that they’re not trying to make the case for racism. Whether or not racism had anything to do with this would be completely irrelevent to these people, they will try to make it so, anyway.
As far as the presidential candidates are concerned, call it what it is; pandering. The president made his comments for obvious reasons, he wants the black vote. The rest of the candidates jumped in because the president did and they weren’t going to give him monopoly on the situation.

Do you really believe that the President beeds to solicit black votes? As a Democrat competing with the GOP which studies show is getting older, whiter and more conservative, I think that’s the last of his concerns.
the gaslamp post
March 24, 2012
AWordorThree, in an election year it would be foolish for a politician to leave any stone unturned. With the rise of black conservatism, would it not stand to reason that a black candidate who was community organizer and Alinsky trained speaker, put forth his best moves?
Also, not that I’m looking to argue with you, but the GOP is not getting older and whiter, but I will agree that it is getting more conservative. Do you know who Rep. Alan West is? How about Project 21? How about the National Black Republication Association (NBRA)? Go check out The Root and see for yourself. Also there is this thing called the Young Republican’s Network, that is also worth looking at.

Oh… WordofThree, I’ll reserve my opinion of the HuffPo, but I will say this; the Gallup Poll, just like the Rasmussen Poll are pretty darn far from accurate. Both polls require you to sign up in order to vote and if you happen to not be around for a particular subject, you’re not counted.
It’s like when they go outside of a TV studio during a talkshow and poll passersby and then say “75% of people surveyed approve of the state requirement to put shoes on dogs.” It depends on who is asked and where. It’s not a true indication, and it shouldn’t be considered one. It’s an attempt to put numbers to an opinion and pass it off as fact. We have to be smarter than that.

I know several Black conservatives, but that doesn’t speak to the larger base. All you have to do is scan the crowd at a GOP debate and see how homogenous the crowd looks.
As far as Allen West, I met him and asked him a question on CBS. I’m the woman in the coral shirt.

You all are a bunch of idiots. The issue in the Trayvon Martin case is that NO ONE WAS ARRESTED! As far as I can tell, the authorities have investigated this crime. The same cannot be said for the Trayvon Martin case. Furthermore, how often does Obama discuss race-related issues? If anything, the black community has been critical his unwillingness to discuss race-related issues. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are not racists. They are civil rights activist that fight for the rights of African-Americans who have historically been discriminated against in this country for hundreds of years. You may not like their personalities, but stop walking around with heads up your asses pretending that this country treats whites and blacks/latinos/native americans fairly and equally.
When the number of hate crimes involving heterosexual white people as victims even comes close to the number of hate crimes that involve sexual and racial minorities, then you may be able to make the argument that there is not a need for black and other racial minority civil rights leasers. Otherwise, shut up and go read a book about the history of racism in this country.
Another thing: pointing out racial disparities or inappropriate treatment does not make you racist, idiots. If you don’t think that there is racism in this country, try being black, latino, Asian and/or Native American. If you honestly don’t think that there is racism in this country, trade in your white lives to live as a member of another race? Yeah…I don’t think so.
Your white privilege and ignorance is showing. Where do you ignoramouses live?

March 24, 2012
Hi Rochee, thanks for posting.
You certainly sound like a cheery sort. As far as you can tell… as of the last story I read on the matter, the case was still under investigation, not to be confused with “investigated” past tense. If his shooter did in fact break the law, he’ll be arrested.
Fight for civil rights and equality? What rights do others have that blacks and other minorities do not? Do we not have a black president? Do we not have a black supreme court justice? Are you telling me that blacks do not occupy every level of government and business? Question for you; which of us has our “head up our asses?”
You seem awfully hung up on this issue of race and from what you said, believe that you personally cornered the market on racial victimhood. I think there are many others who would disagree with you.
Oh and since we are on the subject, I am neither white nor privleged; I just work hard and don’t see race as a relevent issue. Thank you for assuming that anyone whose opinion differs from yours would have to be “white.”
Who’s the real racist here?

Man, Roche’e…. your anger is showing, if for no other reason than not being able to make a believable argument. Yes, I will say, without a doubt that blacks were treated like dirt in this country. It took a long time, but that fact began making a difference back before the Civil War. Many white Union soldiers gave their lives to fight that damn war, and freedom from bondage happened for the black race. It took much more time for equality, however.
Today, race is not nearly as regarded as it once was. Yes, there are still many poor black families, but there are also many poor white folks, too. Blacks have been slowly climbing the ladder of equality, whether you believe it or not. The thing that I see today is that, among blacks, they try to hold their own people to a certain level, or a certain ideal. Take for example, as was said above, Allen West. He is a military man, making the rank of lieutenant colonel, and is now the representative in Congress of the highest per capita income folks in Florida. He is a conservative.
For this fact alone, he has been targeted BY BLACKS as an “Uncle Tom” (boy, talk about going backward 100 + years), and by Democrats as a traitor, simply because he has broken away from the ‘liberal plantation’ that politicians seem to want to keep black folks in. Why is that? Mr. West came from a poor black Atlanta neighborhood, made something of himself, embraces the conservative values that has made America great; and for that, he gets nothing but fleck from liberals. It is the Constitution of the United States that makes men free. Mr. West embraces this. I have the utmost respect for him, and would vote for him in a heartbeat. He is a great American. He has served his country. He is respectable. He cares about Americans as a whole. This makes him a hero, in my mind. I would be proud to have him as the POTUS.
On the other hand, Barack Obama is None Of The Above. He is not a great American. He has not served his country. He is not respectable. He could care less about Americans as a whole, and he could care less about the plight of the black race. He will use their race to his own advantage, but beyond that, he could give a damn about blacks. He is an elitist. He has been given everything his entire life, living in luxury. Do you think he cares about folks in the ghetto? If so, you are stupid. YOUR racism is showing. Just the fact that you compare whites to blacks and hispanics and native Americans shows that you are racist. What about Americans, as a whole? Do you not want the people of this country, ALL the people of this country, to just be considered Americans?
Your brand of race ranting only serves to push black folks back down, and back in time, to a place of being victims. That is what they are trying to do to Allen West. He will not allow this, just as he has vowed not to allow Barack Obama to destroy this country. Bravo!

It’s a hate crime ???? Because a hispanic male who was neighborhood watch over a gated community approached a stranger walking around the neighboorhood to ask him what his business was there. Then the stranger (who happened to be a black male) attacked him and started hitting his head on the concrete??? If someone attacked me (I don’t care what color they are) I would shot to….cause I at the end of the day I want to go home to my family. Funny how the media omits things and twists them around to make the people puppets to what they want them to think. Get the whole story before you make an opinion, especially if you were not there.

you need to get your damn facts straight. the real racist person and ignorant person here is you. Their is way more reverse racism in this country now than the other way around. Your talking on here like you are condoning the fact that white people being attaced by black people is ok because of how blacks are treated. Well it was white people who fought in the war to help end slavery in this country. All im going to end with is if any black person whether it be you or anyone else attacks me or my family they will need an ambulance to take them to the hospital and then the morgue and when more white people start defending theirself in this manner we will have our own justice if black people are stupid enough to attack us

The news media is not about news anymore. It’s about what our politicians & the station commentators believe we should be allowed to know about. Right now it’s only about blacks that have been attacked by whites. This story of blacks lighting a boy on fire doesn’t fit into their curriculum right now. There are plenty of other stories of black crime on white people that have been also ignored.

There is no such thing as a “hate” crime, because such a farce flies in the face of EQUALITY under the law, subjugates people into People Groups [read: Black,white/gay, straight, etc] to the sole benefit of the Political Class, and every crime against a person is hateful.
This diversionary pandering tactic is but a further perversion of the LAW.

This sounds good but it ignores the facts. Some people are targeted based on characteristics that you mentioned. It is a particularly pervasive problem for homosexuals and ethnic minorities. The term “hate crimes” is reserved for people that explicitly disagree that all people are equal. If everyone thought like you, then no….hate crimes wouldn’t exist. But that just isn’t the case.
the gaslamp post
March 25, 2012
AWordorThree, EVERYONE is targeted at one point or another in their lives. You could be too short, or have the wrong kind of hair. You could have a speech impediment or could be the wrong color for a particular neighborhood.
We are human, and trying to insulate ourselves from that fact is doing nothing but weakening us as a whole. Creating an exception for one becomes a slippery slope; as another group will want an exception and another, and yet another. We never notice how much of our own liberty we have given up in the cause of “protecting” a certain group, until our own hands are tied and we cannot protect ourselves. To use the word “hate” to describe a “kind” of crime, are we not forsaking the obvious?
Are you implying that the same crime committed against another; the very same crime, should not render the same punishment because the target wasn’t a minority or a homosexual? If the victim was my mother, I assure you that the two of us would have words.
I’d like to tell you a story about my grandfather. Well, he was my mother’s stepfather, my mother’s biological father split back to the old country last I heard. He was in WWII, and had spent time in France pushing back the Germans. There was a bar that the guys used to go to in France and the proprietor was what they called in those days, a “poof” (homosexual). The Americans used to joke and talk smack to the guy, who was over 6′ tall and could bench press another GI with a full pack, but no one ever messed with him. Why? Because one night on pass, some drunk Polack (I think that’s what grandpa said he was) got tough, and this guy closed down his bar early that night. It was ugly and several guys went to the infirmary that night.
See what I’m saying? The answer isn’t to make exceptions or offer a protected status, the answer is to make ourselves stronger. You have the right to pursue you own happiness, but you have to get there on your own. You and you alone are responsible for sending out that “don’t screw with me” message.
When you say “equal”, what do you mean? Equal birth to an unequal end? Or unequal birth but an equal end? We may have been created equal, but not everyone has equal abilities, or equal talents, equal intelligence, or even drive. By what measure do we consider making things “equal”, which by course of action, make things “unequal” for someone else?
AWordorThree
March 24, 2012
For example, this is a hate crime. The victim here did nothing to warrant the fatal beating she received. However because she is Muslim, her killer hated her and decided her life had no value. There is a difference between this kind of crime and a lover seeking revenge on his cheating wife.

The legal designation of “hate crime” is pointless in finding justice. It’s only use is promoting agenda. All crimes should be dealt equal punishment from the courts. Public opinion is the only place where discussing “hate” as motivation holds any true relevance.

Awordorthree What kind of Equality do you want? Do you want the state to be powerful enough to subvert nature and make us ‘equal’ ? what ever ‘equal’ means , I’d like to see a coherent definition. If you want equality before the law that requires the we;re tried as individuals and not as a member of group. Hate crime also makes the presumption that the state can somehow see whats in mens hearts. You can’t legislate ‘utopia’ into existence you’ll create a tryanny in the process.
Most interracial crime is committed by blacks against Whites. I can go and thw figures for you if you choose not to believe that. Thats the point of hate crime legislation, it’s not about protecting recognised victim groups but about criminalising Whites and specifically White males. It’s pure politics , a kind of 21st century religious law and has nothing to do with Justice and everything to do ideology. Which means your damned before you commit the crime if the ideology defines ‘you’ as an evil doer .
Would you be so keen if the ideological targets where black males? Is it just getting even with YT? If it wasn’t for us where would blacks be today? Our scientific revolution had already started and was really just a continuation of where we had been before the fall of Rome and the growth of the church. It was also White men that stopped slavery in Africa which profited African chiefs and slave traders and had done for over a thousand years before any Europeans became involved. It was us who introduced modern farming and it’s us that even today invent and create the industries you love to work in, the medicines, the cars , the gadgets and philosophies that keep you comfortable , healthy and safe. We would have done all of this anyway. A little gratitude would be welcome and also quite wise at this point in time .We have been very tolerant but that is wearing thin. Ask yourself honestly where would you be with out us and where would be without you?

AWordorThree, I just saw a story on the Blaze about this case. Police have been investigating this and now suspect the woman’s husband did this because she was going to divorce him. They are also looking at the 17-year-old daughter because she was upset about an arranged marriage.
The note was intended to make it “look” like a hate crime.

Why would you think that I would allow or disallow anything? We have a right to speak our minds; all I ask is that we do not alienate each other. Since the start of this blog, I made some interesting observations; I have met people who claim to be liberal but have some unusual conservative values. I have met Democrats who speak like Republicans and vice-versa. Not everyone who claims a particular ideology feels the same way on the same issues. Not all conservatives think alike, any more than all liberals think alike. It has turned into a, “my team versus your team…”
To draw a line in the sand and say that this side is yours and this side is mine is absurd. It sounds like rival sports teams. That is not what makes us stronger.
I am doing this so that I can get ALL OF YOU to talk to each other. Don’t stare at a box and take in what one network says versus another, TALK TO EACH OTHER!
We have a big mess on our hands and we can blame all of the politicians that we want to. The bottom line is that WE voted them in; therefore we all bear the responsibility. Whether you voted in a person or not does not mean that they only represent that group who had voted for them.
We are destined for collapse if we keep doing what we are doing. Is not the definition of insanity; doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?
What happens when we stop listening to them and start listening to each other? I don’t know… Let’s find out, shall we?

Where I lived this was the norm. not the exeption. I can easily name dozens of friends that have experianced the same thing. I have heard things have changed in Virginia beach but I will never now. I home school my child and any childeren may have. No one should be held acountable for things that happened before they were born or had no involvement in. That being said The tribes of northern europe where slaves to the roman empire for 1000 years tortured, raped, starved…. history is ugly buisness, for almost everyone. I don’t think any crime should be labeled a “hate crime”. I mean, aren’t most violent crimes hate based, one way or another? I think its bullshit what happened, and am sickened by the entire thing. This kid was 13, both of his assailants were described as having facial hair, so HOW OLD WERE THEY?! Christ! Thank the gods he was only in the burn unit a few hours, but it’s so wrong that he was there at all simply because he was White! I had some black guy try and break into my apartment with my 3 yr old daughter and myself here, and it took the cops over 4 HOURS to get here! I can guarantee if I had shot him as he was crawling thru my window it would’ve been labeled a ‘hate crime’ and I’M the one who’d've gone to jail because I’m PROUD to be White.
I was recently harassed at a mall because of a White Pride patch on my jacket. I was told it was ‘offensive’….when asked if a person wearing a Native Pride shirt or Black Pride or Mexican Pride would be told the same thing, they had no answer. Why is it that a proud WHITE person is a pig, but any other race can be as openly proud as they want?!
Anyways, I digress. Thanks for posting this article. I hope this family is ok and the boy recovers and becomes stronger for it.

The idea to complain about being a “targeted” race is idiotic. I cannot see how it is justified to claim racial bigotry then turn around and curse the white man for everything that happens to you. If people would take responsibility for their own actions, it would be a much different world. When hurricane Katrina hit, President Bush was called a racist and so on because FEMA was not activated in 30 seconds
