It was a brazen scheme to smuggle drugs and cell phones into Baltimore jails. More than two dozen people face federal charges, including corrections officers, some of whom got pregnant by the same inmate.

Rochelle Ritchie has more on the case involving the notorious Black Guerilla Family gang.

It’s a jailhouse soap opera involving drugs, sex and money between corrections officers and inmates. The operation was brought down  by tapped cell phones.

Twenty-five people now face federal charges after being part of one of the largest gang-operated criminal enterprises seen at the Baltimore City Detention Center.

“These 25 defendants participated in running the activities of the Black Guerilla Family from behind bars in Baltimore City,” said Rod Rosenstein, U.S. Attorney.

It happened about 10:30 on Wednesday night in the 1,000 block of Idlewild Drive.

22-year-old Paul Lukac and 24-year-old Justin Henschen are accused of breaking into John and Matt Fugate’s home, but those two suspects had no idea what was waiting for them.

A threat on his family, turned the soft-spoken Matt Fugate, into an armed protector.

Matt was behind his bedroom door when out of nowhere, he says two men kicked in the front door of his Idlewild Drive home.

“I raced for the gun vault and had my gun in my hand in 5-seconds and then answered the door,” says Matt.

Homeowner Matt Fugate held intruders at gunpoint until authorities arrived.

His brother John’s 911 call explains what happened next.

Former Baltimore County police officer Aaron Pross

Gigi Barnett reports the officer is accused of doing this repeatedly.

According to charging documents, detectives were able to link sexually explicit cell phone message back to someone on the force.

While he should have been responding to emergency calls, Baltimore County Police tell WJZ that Officer Aaron Pross was having sexual relations in his patrol car while on duty.

Scathing charging documents reveal the five-year veteran was sexting a 16-year-old girl.

“He has let down his fellow officers and he has let down this agency,” said Cpl. Cathy Batton, Baltimore County Police spokeswoman.

Richard Braun, 50, who was arrested last Friday, was found dead in his home Tuesday, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Braun had recently been released from the Pima County jail, Widmer said.

In January, a tip was sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about three photos depicting child sexual abuse that were uploaded to an online data storage website, police said.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.VA) has announced he plans to bring back the failed gun-control legislation.

Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday said he would re-introduce a measure that would require criminal and mental health background checks for gun buyers at shows and online. The Democrat says that if lawmakers read the bill, they will support it.

Manchin sponsored a previous version of the measure with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. It failed.

Manchin says there was confusion over what was in the bill.

Congress took up gun control legislation in the wake of the school shooting that killed 20 children and six adults in Connecticut last year. But it was blocked by supporters of the powerful pro-gun lobby, the National Rifle Association.

Manchin appeared on “Fox News Sunday.”

The Hill newspaper reported this weekend that Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe and Rep. Frank Lucas, both Republicans, have introduced a bill that would put limits on how many bullets all federal agencies could purchase each year. The limits would not apply to the U.S. military.

The two GOP lawmakers contend that President Barack Obama’s administration is buying unnecessarily large amounts of ammo for federal law enforcement agencies in order to dry up the amount of bullets Americans can buy.

Nautica McCrary, an 11-year-old girl who escaped through a bedroom window, was treated and released from a local hospital Saturday morning for smoke inhalation. She told relatives that her mother, 27-year-old Alonna McCrary, could have gotten out, but she stayed inside to rescue the younger girls, who were spending the night together.

“She just insisted she wasn’t going to let them babies go,” said Roxanne Arnold of Newnan, who said she is the 11-year-old’s aunt. “That’s what I applaud her for. She was risking her own life to get the babies.”

The children killed were identified as: Eriel McCrary, 5, Messiah White, 3, Nikia White, 2, and McKenzie Florence, who is either 1 or 2 years old.

Several of the girls were related. Alonna was mother to Eriel, Nautica, and Nikia, and the three youngest shared the same father.

Judicial Watch, the Washington watchdog which is known for tracking down and trying to stamp out government corruption, has issued a report revealing that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working with the Mexican government to promote the U.S. food stamp program to illegal aliens.

The report said the program, called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, features a Spanish-language flyer supplied to the Mexican Embassy by the USDA “with a statement advising Mexicans in the U.S. that they do not need to declare their immigration status in order to receive financial assistance.”

The bill sponsored by state Rep. Casey Guernsey (R-Bethany), which the House passed with a 117-43 vote, says that a “federal official must not enforce a federal firearm law when the firearm is manufactured and remains in the state and that any new federal law banning or restricting ownership of a semi-automatic firearm is unenforceable.”

Guernsey told the Huffington Post that “whenever the federal government or President Obama takes any measure on gun control,” they are taking away Second Amendment rights of citizens. This proposed legislation would only apply to gun laws enacted in 2013 and afterward, because Guernsey said he believes those put in place in prior years can be effective.
