Feel Good Story of the Day: BBQ Raises Funds For Young Cancer Patient

Posted on October 18, 2011

South Carolina (Bertram Rantin-The State) – Lexington County residents and businesses recently teamed with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Shealy’s BBQ to raise $15,000 for an area youth battling a brain tumor.

Community members donated the funds during a benefit dinner earlier this month for 10-year-old Wyatt Boatwright. About 350 people attended.

Sgt. Sam Gunter of the Sheriff’s Department, whose child goes to school with Wyatt at Gilbert Elementary School, coordinated the department’s participation in the benefit after learning about Wyatt’s ongoing treatments.

Shealy’s catered the meal, and Assistant Sheriff Keith Kirchner and Detective Tom Bryant held an archery shoot for the roughly 30 children who attended.

Wyatt was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2010 and has since undergone brain surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

“Wyatt remains in good spirits most of the time,” Sheriff James Metts said. “While every day presents physical and mental challenges for Wyatt, Wyatt is confident that he will overcome the brain tumor through the support of his family, his community and his faith.”
