Ohio (Paul McKibben-Cincinnati.com) – A Mason High school teacher has no memory of having sex with five high school students, her lawyer said Monday as the teacher’s trial opened.

Stacy Schuler is not guilty of having sex with five Mason High School students because medical and psychological issues prevented her from knowing what she was doing, her attorney argued in Warren County Common Pleas Court.

Charlie H. Rittgers, Schuler’s lawyer, said the prosecution wants to look at Schuler “as a sex maniac with an insatiable appetite for sex, drugs and alcohol who wanted to be passed around.”

Rittgers said the problem is that Schuler’s ability to make sound and knowing decisions through those times were impaired by a number of medical and psychological issues. He said that will be supported by witnesses and records.

Rittgers said before the alleged offenses, Schuler’s ailments included bi-polar disorder.

Schuler is charged with 16 felony counts of sexual battery and three misdemeanor counts of providing alcohol to minors. She has pleaded not guilty, but Judge Robert Peeler has allowed her to enter an alternate plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Schuler is accused of having sex with five Mason High students at her Springboro home. The alleged conduct happened in August through December last year.

Authorities also allege Schuler provided alcohol to two of the students twice in August 2010 at her home. She is accused of giving alcohol to a third student from September to October 2010 at her home.

Her attorneys contend Schuler had become impaired and therefore wasn’t able to prevent the young men from taking advantage of her.

Attorneys on both sides have agreed to a gag order that prevents them from making public comments other than on procedural matters.

Schuler, 33, resigned in February, ending a 10-year career with Mason Schools as a physical education teacher, health teacher and athletic trainer with Mason Schools.

Rittgers said Schuler’s down time was rare and precious. He said she consumed alcohol to reduce stress and she stayed at home when she was drinking the alcohol. He said the down time was usually 10:30 – 11 on Friday night after she got home from a football game after she treated injured players. He said she was alone and could relax.
