UPDATE:  A suspect had been aprehended in this story.  Update located after the original story.

Arkansas (LocalTV/Tribune Digital) – Fayetteville police confirm a suspect involved in a home invasion Monday night has died.

According to Fayetteville police, three black males, armed with handguns, broke into the home of two University of Arkansas Fayetteville students, Cory Roberts, 22, and William Whitehead, 21, on 232 N. Olive St.

After a struggle, two men were shot.

Roberts was one of the men who was shot but had accidentally shot himself in the leg. The other man was one of the suspects, and he was later transported to Washington Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.

The two remaining suspects fled and have not yet been identified.

Police say Roberts drove to the Valero gas station at College Ave. and Lafayette St. several blocks away after being shot. Witnesses say his face was covered in blood.  Witnesses also say he had a gunshot wound to his leg. Paramedics treated him the on scene and then transported him to Washington Regional Medical Center.

Witnesses said he was able to escape from a bathroom window.

“To me, it just sounded like glass breaking or some people hitting something or maybe just like car doors slamming.  To me I thought it was definitely louder than normal, but we live next to college kids so I just thought it was someone being loud,” says neighbor Cary Cameron.

Police say the neighborhood is secure despite Monday night’s shooting.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking that it could have happened right next door to me, and then I’m not sure if they knew them or if it was a random home invasion or what.  So yeah, it makes me a little nervous,” says Cameron.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Fayetteville Police Department at (479) 587-3555.

UPDATE:  One suspect has been arrested.

Arkansas (Kumasi Aaron and Leah Randazzo-5Newsonline.com) – Fayetteville police arrested a teenager in connection with Monday’s deadly home invasion.

David Richardson, 19, was arrested Friday night on charges of aggravated residential burglary and engaging in violent group activity.

David Richardson

The arrest comes four days after officers say three men broke into a home on 232 N. Olive Ave.

Richardson became a person of interest in the investigation when police discovered independent eyewitness accounts and phone records that he might be involved.

Eyewitnesses told police marijuana transactions took place at the house. Police say they believe this incident was not a random burglary.  Authorities say the house and residents were specifically targeted.

The prosecuting attorney is recommending a $250,000 bond. At the time of the arrest, Richardson’s bags were packed. Sources told police he was trying to leave town.

Police say one of the men who invaded the home, 21-year-old Roderick Rashaun Cooper, was shot and killed during the invasion.

Police say Cooper was shot by Cory Roberts, one of the residents. Roberts was able to escape the house. Roberts also shot himself in the leg.

The other roommate, William Whitehead, was not injured. Both men are students at the University of Arkansas.

Police say one more suspect is still on the loose.  Police have not yet released a motive in this home invasion.
