On Thursday afternoon, 41-year-old Cirilo Castillo went before Justice of the Peace Charlie Espinoza, who formally charged him with two counts of cruelty to animals and two counts of criminal trespass. Espinoza set the total bonds for Castillo at $60,000 before sending him back to the Hidalgo County Jail, where he was being held.

Court records show that on Dec. 30, a female horse owner went to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office to tell investigators that her video surveillance system had caught her neighbor entering her barn, tying her brown mare to a fence, tying her back legs together and then having sex with it. The barn was located on the 6000 block of East Alberta Road.

Investigators were able to identify the man in the video as Castillo and arrested him Tuesday. During an interview with authorities, Castillo admitted to having sex with the horse and also admitted to a previous case.

Months earlier, investigators had met with a rancher who owned a property in the 6600 block of Alberta and claimed that he had caught a man named Castillo tying up his mares and having sex with them. The rancher said he had caught Castillo on four such occasions.

The rancher identified Castillo in a photo lineup.

One of the horse owners refused to comment on the case, citing its embarrassing nature.
