New Mexico (The Gaslamp Post) – Move over Wisconsin, New Mexico is about to steal your title…  Store security video shows a mother making a brazen, broad daylight, getaway, after police say she swung her baby at a security guard, in order to escape.  According to police, Nicole Valenzuela along with her friend, Michelle Gordon, made a five-finger-discount shopping trip to a local Target store in Albuquerque, on April 26, 2012.

According to KRQE-TV, the women, accompanied by their 3 children, all under the age of 3, attempted to leave the store with almost $300 worth of beauty supplies that they hadn’t paid for.  They were quickly intercepted by store loss prevention upon exiting the store.  Gordon was apprehended and wrestled to the ground, but Valenzuela reportedly swung a car seat containing her 1-year-old at a security guard before darting out into a busy parkinglot, with two small children.

“It appears (Valenzuela) is using the child as a weapon and a shield,” said Ofc. Tasia Martinez. “She just had a complete disregard for the children’s’ safety, and she was completely selfish in not wanting to be apprehended.”

One of the security guards managed to catch the one-woman-crime-wave’s license plate number before she could escape.  Police arrested her several days later at her home.  Her children’s father, Isaiah Griego, was caught off guard by the allegations of his children’s mother stealing that day.

“She used to do shoplifting back in the day, but I don’t know if she’s been doing that a lot lately,” Griego said.  “She’s a very good mother.  She cares a lot about her kids.  She really does.”

The couple reportedly have 5 children together.  The children all remain in the custody of Griego, but Children, Youth, and Families, intends to keep on eye on them.

Valenzuela was charged with 3 counts of felony child abuse, and 1 misdemeanor count of shoplifting.  She reportedly told detectives that she ran because she had 2 warrants, one of which was for failing to register a pet.  Gordon faces charges of shoplifting and child endangerment.

No court date was reported.
