Readers Choice: Pitbull Drags Master Out From In Front Of Train, Loses Leg

Posted on May 9, 2012

Massachusetts (The Gaslamp Post) Credit to Gaslamp Post reader, my Mom for this story. – A woman’s dog has saved her life after pulling her from the path of a freight train.  The woman, Christine Spain, fell unconscious while crossing some railroad tracks around midnight, on May 4, 2012.  Spain escaped unscathed, but the pooch was severely injured by the train.

The engineer driving the locomotive says that he saw the dog pulling the woman from the path of his engine, as he was applying the brakes.

The dog, an 8-year-old pitbull named Lilly, was given to Spain as a therapy dog by her son who is a police officer.  Spain’s son had rescued the dog three years ago, and gave her to his mother to who has struggled with alcoholism nearly all of her life.

Lilly reportedly sustained a severe pelvis injury, her right front leg was completely de-gloved, leaving only bone, and some other internal injuries.  Her leg had to be amputated, and vets say that they must let Lilly heal before they can do anything about her hip.

The animal hospital Lilly was taken to is the same one that Spain’s son had taken her to when he rescued her.

Lilly was reported by first responders to have remained at her master’s side, guarding her even after having the flesh torn from her leg.

Lilly is recovering in an animal hospital, she has been receiving cards and well wishes.  A fund has been established to help pay for her care.
