Male Prisoner Accidentally Placed In Woman’s Cell, Female Prisoner Sexually Assaulted!

South Carolina (The Gaslamp Post) – A convicted thief is facing sexual assault charges and two jail guards are on paid leave after a female prisoner was sexually assaulted by a male inmate they sent to her cell.  The York County Sheriff’s office has acknowledged that the sexual assault was a direct result of officers failing to follow procedures, according to WSOC-TV.

Internal Affairs is reportedly investigating the incident.

James Richardson, 33, a convicted thief, is reported to have been assigned to the woman’s cell, and sent there unescorted.  He is reported to have gone there and shortly after arriving had, ” inappropriately touched her on her breast, buttocks and genital area,” according to the incident report.

“In this situation, they did not check the cell.  They did not physically escort that individual, so they did not see that there was someone else in there with him at the time,” said Kristie Jordan, attorney for the York County Sheriff’s Office.  Other employees may be facing disciplinary action as a result of the sexual assault.

The woman is reported to have been jailed for failure to return rental property.

This incident is the second this year in which something seriously wrong happened at the jail.  Early this year a convicted murderer was mistakenly released.  The sheriff has decided to meet with jail supervisors in order to determine if more training is necessary, to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again in the future.
