Not the Officers involved in the shooting

Michigan (The Gaslamp Post) – An Oakland County deputy was forced to shoot his K9, when it attacked him in a veterinarian’s office earlier this month.  Authorities say that 23-year veteran of the department was forced to defend himself when his partner, who had been with the department since 2007, bit and latched onto his forearm and stopped obeying commands.

“This is an extremely sad situation,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. “These dogs are more than a police asset. They are beloved members of the department and the handler’s family.”

The officer had taken 5-year-old “Gunner”, a purebred German Shepard, to the vet because the dog had begun displaying signs of increased aggression.  He was looking to explore any available options as to how he could address his concerns with the dog, on June 7, 2012.

According to Detroit Free Press, the dog became agitated when the vet and the officer attempted to leash him, and that is when he attacked his handler.  The deputy was transported for medical treatment and released.  The K9 was taken to the Michigan State University for a necropsy (an examination and dissection of a dead body to determine cause of death or the changes produced by disease).
