Georgia (The Gaslamp Post) – Police in Athens arrested a man after neighbors in his trailer park reported him being covered in blood and telling them that he thought he killed his wife.  Robert Lee Austin, 38, is alleged to have become physically violent towards his wife who had recently lost her leg.

Robert Lee Austin, 38, accused of beating amputee wife with her own crutch.

Authorities say a resident of the park called the cell phone of an officer who routinely patrols the area Thursday night, after Austin had gone to their home intoxicated, and explained what had happened.

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Austin and his 32-year-old wife had gotten into a fight before he had left their home.  When he returned home he continued the fight where he had left off.

Austin reportedly began beating his wife, punching her several times in the face and until finally beating her with her crutch which he broke during the attack.  Austin also reportedly broke his wife’s cell phone when she tried to call 911.

He then went to a neighboring trailer in the park where he told them what had happened.

Police arrived and found Austin’s wife unconscious on a bed, having sustained injuries and bruising to her face and body.  She was transported to the hospital and treated for what are being reported as non-life threatening injuries.

Police took Austin into custody Thursday night, charging him under the Family Violence Act with obstruction of a 911 call, false imprisonment, battery, aggravated assault, and criminal damage to property.  He remains held without bond in the Clark County Jail.

Authorities are not sure what started the altercation but believe alcohol may have been a factor.
