Indiana (The Gaslamp Post) – A customer who had rented a handgun from an Indianapolis area gun store reportedly turned that same handgun on the man behind the counter.  As the clerk began taking shots to the abdomen, he reportedly drew his own handgun and returned fire, killing his assailant.

Police say that an unidentified man in his 30’s entered Don’s Guns and had rented a handgun to be used at the stores target range.  After going through several boxes of ammo, the customer returned to the counter where he was told how much he owed for his time and ammo used at the range.

After a minute, the customer reportedly drew the handgun on the clerk and shot him twice in the abdomen.  The clerk, Ben Chance who had been an employee of the store for 19 years, drew his handgun and returned fire, killing the customer.

Chance was critically injured but expected to survive.

Don Davis, owner of Don’s Guns

“I’ve been here 40 years and this is the gun business — you have a kook every now and then,” said Don Davis, owner of Don’s Guns.  “If you shoot us, we’ll shoot right back.”

“It don’t take us but an instance; it takes me one second to take my gun out right now and shoot it,” said Davis.

One couple completely lucked out during the incident.  They had been in the store about 10 minutes before the shooting but the man’s wife reportedly forgot her ID.  When they returned, the store was surrounded by police.

“We could have been in the store; we was in there looking around,” said Gillace Samples.  “If we stuck around 10-15 minutes we might have got shot.”
