Florida (The Gaslamp Post) – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; guys, be careful when tossing your line in that ‘ol internet lake for a date, no tellin’ what you’re going to pull out.

Even still, when you think you’ve met that special someone, keep a look out for red flags.

Let’s see if you can spot them.

Our story takes us to scenic New Port Ritchie, Florida, where we find our hero, Joseph Bruno, recovering from what could only be described as a nightmare first date.  As of this story, Bruno, 44, is still recovering from injuries he suffered from the hands of a woman whom he had hoped would have been a love-connection.

After moving from Virginia to his home in Florida, loneliness had begun to set in and after clicking an internet pop-up ad for singlesnet.com, he began his online journey for a mate.

Bruno, 44, a former home restoration company owner had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and had chosen to move down to Florida for some peace and quiet.  After two years of dating various women online, he finally found who he believed to be the one.

His new love interest, whom he discovered in early September, Bobby Jo Curtis, 40, agreed to go out on a date with him.  She had no car so he drove out to pick her up from her room at a nearby motel.

According to The Tampa Bay Times, Curtis came out to meet him with her teenage son, carrying a trash bag full of clothes.  Although he thought that odd, he took Curtis, along with her son and their trash bag full of clothes out to eat.  They enjoyed conversation over pizza.

Curtis gave Bruno a hard-luck story about them being evicted from their room, and asked if she could spend the night on his couch.  Thinking he was helping a single mom who needed it, he said yes.

One night on his couch turned into a week.  During this time, Bruno said that Curtis neither showered nor changed out of the tight jeans and red top she had worn on their date.

According to Bruno, they didn’t eat his food, she never kissed him, and once warm conversation turned to cold silence.  He later said that he continued to let her stay because he was lonely.

A sudden, sharp blow to the back of his head unexpectedly came while he was watching the Yankees game on his computer, on September 14, 2012.  Confused, Bruno looked up to see Curtis holding a 2×4.

“You’re lucky I ain’t kill you two days before,” said Curtis, according to Bruno.  He said that she clobbered him again and again until everything went black.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff, Curtis then took Bruno’s van and picked up her friend, 26-year-old Vanessa Musson. It was reportedly Musson’s birthday.

They returned to Bruno’s home where they tied him to his office chair with a tow rope.  Bruno reportedly drifted in and out of consciousness while all of this was going on.  He was beaten for several more minutes after that.

He awoke to a gun being pressed against his head, and a voice demanding the combination to his safe, which he surrendered.

Bruno’s neighbor, David Ragon, 69, had witnessed Curtis and Musson loading Bruno’s belongings into his van, and went over to see what was going on.  A surprise shot from behind took him down.  Curtis’s 16-year-old son, Bryan, reportedly came up behind Ragon and hit him in the head with a hammer.  Repeated blows had broken his jaw.

Curtis and Musson reportedly made off with several of Bruno’s guitars, his wallet, gun collection, rare baseball cards, comic books, and flat screen television.

Ragon was able to crawl back to his house after regaining consciousness, and called police.  Both were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries.  Doctors had to perform an emergency tracheotomy on Bruno.  His head reportedly had to be stapled back together, and he received seven stitches to close a gash over his eye as well.

Curtis and her son were located by deputies the next day.  Musson was taken into custody at the apartment of her attorney.  All 3 remain in custody.

They have been charged with attempted murder, false imprisonment, and grand theft.

So far, only Bruno’s van has been returned.  He said he’s done with online dating.

“I believe there’s a devil,” he said. “But I didn’t think the devil was walking around on Earth. But that’s what she is. She’s the devil.”
