Man Charged With Cruelty After Son Decided To Ride In Pickup Truck’s Toolbox?

Vermont (The Gaslamp Post) – A dad has been cited after police say that he put one of his kids in a bed-mounted toolbox in the bed of his pickup truck for a 40 mile journey.  Police say Russell Johnson Sr, 42, had picked up his three children from the home of his ex-wife back in September, and not having enough room up front, had one of the kids ride in the toolbox, which spans the length of the bed, for the trip back to Bradford, New Hampshire.

Police in Vermont cited Johnson for cruelty by a person having custody over another, on November 14, 2012.

Johnson told police that he didn’t force his 17-year-old, 6′ 3″ tall son into the toolbox, but that he decided to ride inside of it for the trip back, of his own accord.

He also reportedly stated that he was having trouble with his other vehicle, and that was the only reason that he had to drive the truck.

According to the Smoking Gun, Johnson’s teenage daughter, upset about not being allowed to live with her mom full-time and for being slapped for using foul language, went to the state child welfare agency to report the incident.
