India (The Gaslamp Post) – A woman and a male companion were attacked on a bus south of Delhi last night. According to the Daily Telegraph, six drunk men boarded an otherwise empty bus, beat the two with an iron bar, and then took turns raping the 23-year-old student.
The two had been at a mall to see a movie and were on their way home when they encountered the group of guys who used the poor girl as a party favor. They reportedly told the woman that they were “teaching her a lesson” for being out so late.
There was a curtain which hid the attack from view, and when the mob of drunks was done, they simply threw the two off of the bus and left them.
The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for serious injuries.
Delhi is reportedly the rape capitol of India. The city has seen 635 so far this year.
Ratna Kapur, a professor of law in Delhi, said the high levels of rape in the capital reflected a crisis of Indian masculinity as more women take higher paid jobs in former male strongholds. In an article in The Hindu, she said India’s preference for sons bred a sense of male privilege and entitlement and “erodes the possibility of respect for women.”
