Georgia (The Gaslamp Post) – A mom told her children not to answer the door when they heard knocking, early afternoon this past Friday. Believing it was a solicitor, she chose to simply ignore whoever was at the door.
She reportedly saw a man from the second floor window of her home office and called her husband.
The mother called her husband who was at work, who told her to take the children and hide. He then called 911 to summon police while she gathered her twin daughters and hid in a crawlspace.
It was at this time that the intruder, Paul Ali Slater gained entry to the home and reportedly began rummaging around. While poking around through the family’s belongings, he unexpectedly found the woman and her children hiding behind the crawlspace door.
He also saw the barrel of a .38 caliber revolver pointed right at his face.
Mom began firing as fast as she could, hitting him 5 times. She got up, ordered the Slater not to move or she would shoot him again, and then ran with her children to a neighbors home.
Police say Slater fled the home and made it to his car in an attempt to escape but crashed in a nearby wooded area.
“My wife is a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do as responsible, prepared gun owner,” Donnie Herman said.
He said he’s thankful for his family’s safety.
“Her life is saved, and her kids’ life is saved, and that’s all I’d like to say,” Herman said.
Slater remains hospitalized on a ventilator, being treated for gunshot wounds to his lung, stomach, and liver. He was reportedly released from jail in August after serving six months for battery and some probation violations.
Police have charged Slater with burglary. They do not expect to charge the mother.
