Indiana (The Gaslamp Post) – No good deed goes unpunished – never forget that. The next time you’re tempted to stop to help a cute and furry critter which was just hit by a car, do like the other drivers and just keep driving.
A South Bend woman who saw a wounded raccoon on the side of the road let her heart get the best of her when she pulled over and attempted to help the injured animal. Using a bag of potato chips, she was successful in luring it into her car.
She fed it until it fell asleep. Upon awakening, and she was out of chips, the darned thing turned on her.
According to WBND-TV, the woman quickly exited the car and called 911.
With no where else to turn, the woman called 911.
Caller: I have a rabid raccoon in my car. I need to figure out how to get it out.
Operator: um…hmm…OK do you got some more potato chips?
Caller: I do not. But it won’t come out.
Operator: I would suggested that you open your door and see if you can coax it back out.
Although that maneuver didn’t work, the St. Joseph County Humane Society soon arrived and retrieved the raccoon from the woman’s car.
“Don’t pick up wild animals. I don’t care how cute, little, whatever, they are dangerous. If they are carrying rabies in this county, that is a bad thing,” said St. Joseph County Humane Society director Dr. Carol Ecker.
Ecker says if you ever thing about trying to save an injured animal, do not pull out the chips. She says the only thing you should be grabbing for is a phone, so you can call them.
